![]() It’s A Great Time To Be A Geek Neo, Wolverine, the little cartoon fish, Johnny Depp in dreadlocks, the big green guy, Arnold from the future, Sean Connery in that comic book movie, that OTHER comic book movie, Sinbad (not that Sinbad, but the other one), the angels, Lara, and of course Bill. The geekiness in the air is so thick you can cut it with your Wal-mart special limited edition light saber. Why all the excitement? Everyone in Hollywood is banking on this season to be THE season for making a comeback. And it begins TODAY! I can’t wait to sit in the theatre tonight and begin my five-month marathon of movie going. If trailers are any indication at least half of the movies hinted at above will be seen at least a couple of times by yours truly. That is if all of those movies actually make it to my little backwoods burg of a town. I think Smallville has a better chance at getting some of those flicks than I will. Of course most of the summer block busters are going to be targeted at a large number of theatres, so here’s hoping for me. I can think of nothing better than to sit in air-conditioned comfort noshing on nachos and staring at the flickering screen – eyes glazed over in shear joy.[an error occurred while processing this directive]The biggest thread through all of these soon-to-be-block-busters is of course the special effects. I would be stating the obvious if I said we are going to be seeing a lot of them over the next several months. From fighting 35 digital copies of Agent Smith to the creepy effects that will make Jeffery Rush look like a decaying pirate the technology behind the magic will be even bigger news in the coming months than possibly the movies themselves. Technology has allowed fantastic wizardry concocted from our little brains to be created in more life like detail than we ever thought possible. If you attended NAB 2003, you probably got a sneak peek at some of the technology behind these motion pictures. If you missed it there, there will be plenty of strutting going on at SIGGRAPH 2003 in San Diego. Since most of the gee-wiz stuff seen on the screen is done digitally, SIGGRAPH will be the place to talk about it. Is it any wonder that the show falls right in the middle of the summer movie-palooza?Ooooo… I can’t wait! From the shear entertainment standpoint, it is a great time to be a geek!
